At San Diego Cooperative Charter School (SDCCS), we talk a lot about the impact that parent and family involvement has on our TK-8 grade students’ learning. It’s scientifically proven that parent engagement can directly affect student outcomes, including school attendance, classroom behavior, attitudes towards learning and overall academic achievements. Laying the groundwork for success during the early years is important. So how can you get involved with your child’s learning at SDCCS? We’re glad you asked!

Teaching Starts At Home

You may have heard the saying “the parent is the child’s first teacher”. At San Diego Cooperative Charter School, we recognize that parents are vital to every child’s learning experience. From creating a home environment that supports learning; to listening to and respecting children’s opinions; to nurturing the SDCCS values of environmental stewardship and social justice – families create a foundation for every child’s education.

Communicate With Us

SDCCS teachers and staff work alongside parents to support our students’ learning. Our small-school setting enables us to know every student – and their families – by name. We’ll reach out to parents to coordinate tutoring or other support if we see their child struggling with a subject. For students who could benefit from enrichment, we’ll work with parents to identify opportunities to extend learning inside and outside of the classroom. Be willing to check in with your teacher via email, phone or in-person visits. We guarantee it will be time well spent!

Volunteer Your Time

SDCCS parents and caregivers are invited – but not required – to volunteer for our school at least 52 hours per year. These “hours” can be earned in ways that accommodate the schedules of working parents and busy families. From helping with in-class teacher support and field trip chaperones; caring for campus animals and gardens; coordinating bake sales, social hours or book fairs; or participating in off-campus clothing drives and spirit events, there are lots of ways to be involved at SDCCS. Our School Board is run by volunteers, and our active Parent Staff Association welcomes new members throughout the year on planning committees and more – contact them if you’d like to sign up!

How Else Can You Get Involved?

There are so many ways to engage in your child’s learning! Here are some ideas from SDCCS parents:

  • Read with your child
  • Help with schoolwork
  • Discuss school events together
  • Attend school functions like Project Nights, theater productions and art shows
  • Sign up for parent-teacher conferences
  • Join in Community Celebrations like Arbor Day and the International Day of Peace
  • Volunteer in your child’s classroom

Parents and caregivers are valued at SDCCS. Our close-knit community of teachers, staff and families know each other and partner together to ensure student success. Contact us and enroll today!
