At San Diego Cooperative Charter School, we love meeting families who are looking for a school home. We encourage them to come for a tour and learn more about our tuition-free TK-8 charter school. So what’s one question we get asked a lot? “What’s a Co-op?”
It’s Who We Are
You may be surprised to learn that SDCCS is the oldest cooperative charter school in San Diego, and one of only two TK-8 cooperative schools in the state of California. We were founded 20 years ago with the vision to be a hands-on partner with families in their children’s education. It’s fundamental to who we are!

It’s For Everyone
SDCCS is more than a school – we are a chosen community for our students and their families. Our campus is a welcoming space where everyone belongs. Parents are typically present in each of our classrooms throughout the day, assisting teachers with reading services and project support. Three annual Project Nights bring alumni back to reconnect with their peers and celebrate student artwork and performances. The SDCCS “community” extends beyond our campus too. We partner with area businesses and nonprofits to host field trips and service learning projects. And we are present in our greater community – our students and families participate in local Arbor Day and International Day of Peace festivals.

It Relies On You
Our unique and effective project-based learning model relies on the involvement of parents – both inside and outside the classroom. Parents are invited, but not required, to volunteer for our school at least 52 hours per year. These “hours” can be earned in a variety of ways that accommodate the schedules of working parents and busy families. From helping with in-class teacher support and field trip chaperones; attending teacher conferences or book fairs; or coordinating off-campus clothing drives and trash pick up, there are lots of ways to be involved at SDCCS. And our active Parent Staff Association welcomes new members throughout the year on planning committees and more – contact them if you’d like to sign up!
At San Diego Cooperative Charter School, our “Co-op” model means we partners with families – and our community – for student success. Is your child ready to thrive? Contact us and learn more today!
